Circular and organic-based fertilisers ready to scale up in Europe, says ECOFI

At the High-Level Dialogue on securing a sustainable, competitive and fair EU fertilisers system held in Brussels on 13 April 2026, the European Consortium of the Organic-Based Fertiliser Industry (ECOFI) called for concrete measures to accelerate the scale-up of circular and organic-based fertilising products across Europe.

Represented by its President, Nicolas Willaume, ECOFI highlighted a critical opportunity: Europe already possesses significant nutrient resources within its borders, yet these remain underutilised. The challenge is not availability, but transformation — turning these resources into reliable, efficient fertilising products and ensuring they are effectively distributed across the EU to meet farmers’ needs.

ECOFI emphasised that improving the use of domestic nutrient streams is key to strengthening Europe’s resilience and reducing dependency on external inputs. By converting locally available resources into high-quality fertilisers, the sector can support farmers while contributing to a more sustainable and competitive agricultural system.

Discussions focused on scaling domestic nutrient resources, with participants highlighting the need to better valorise Europe’s existing nutrient base through circular and organic-based fertilisers that improve efficiency and reduce environmental losses. Unlocking investment and innovation was also a priority, underlining the importance of a clear and predictable regulatory framework — including effective implementation of the EU Fertilising Products Regulation, harmonised end-of-waste criteria, adapted animal by-products rules, and pathways for currently missing materials.

Finally, participants underlined that increasing supply must go hand in hand with supporting farmers. This includes stronger nutrient management approaches, reliable tools, and targeted incentives under the Common Agricultural Policy to drive uptake, alongside addressing both immediate cost pressures and longer-term system efficiency.

The High-Level Dialogue confirmed strong interest across the value chain and EU institutions in strengthening resilience, reducing dependencies and improving nutrient efficiency. ECOFI welcomed this focus and sees this first Dialogue as the beginning of a structured process.

ECOFI stands ready to contribute concrete solutions to the development of the upcoming EU Fertiliser Action Plan and to support the scale-up of a competitive and resilient circular fertiliser sector.
