ECOFI has submitted its feedback to the European Commission’s evaluation of the Fertilising Products Regulation (FPR). ECOFI’s members welcomed the publication of the FPR in 2019. Six years later, however, regulatory inconsistencies, missing materials and slow updates to component material categories (CMCs) continue to prevent meaningful access to the EU single market for circular and organic-based fertilisers.

In our feedback, ECOFI calls for a revision of the FPR that genuinely supports farmers’ adoption of organic-based fertilisers (OBFs), supports nutrient recycling and ensures a competitive, sustainable and circular future for the EU, strengthening Europe’s ability to play a leading global role in this fast-paced and innovative sector.

The submission also sets out in detail the key challenges currently facing ECOFI’s members, including:

  • Extended REACH requirements – which hamper the adoption of circular products without improving safety
  • Missing component materials such as ABPs
  • No pathway for adding new circular materials or processes to the FPR
